EV battery degradation – facts and myths. How much range will you actually lose after 5 years?

Many legends have grown around electric cars, and the biggest one is about "dying batteries." Many potential drivers fear that after a few years of use, the battery will only be fit for replacement, and the car's range will drop by half. What is the reality in 2026? We check the data, debunk myths, and suggest how a proper home charger can extend the life of your electric vehicle.

Does an electric car battery wear out quickly? (Facts)

Battery degradation is a natural chemical process, but it is not nearly as drastic as it might seem. Modern lithium-ion and LiFePO4 (LFP) cells are designed to outlast the life cycle of the car itself.

Statistics from millions of kilometers driven (e.g., data from the Tesla or Geely fleets) show that the average battery capacity loss is between 1% and 2% per year. This means that after 5 years of operation, most cars retain about 90-95% of their original efficiency.

Myth: After 5 years, the range will drop by half

This is one of the most frequently repeated myths. For the range to drop by 50%, the car would have to be operated in an extremely improper manner or have a manufacturing defect (which in such a case is covered by the manufacturer's warranty – usually 8 years or 160,000 km).

In practice, if your new car has a range of 400 km, after 5 years you will realistically be able to drive about 370-380 km. For the average driver, this difference is almost imperceptible in daily use.

What damages an electric car battery the most?

Degradation depends not only on time, but primarily on how the vehicle is used. Here are the three main enemies of your battery:

  1. Frequent use of fast DC chargers: High-power direct current generates huge amounts of heat, which accelerates cell aging processes.
  2. Extreme charge levels: Leaving the car with the battery charged to 100% or discharged to 0% for a long time causes so-called chemical stress.
  3. High temperatures: Overheating the battery during aggressive driving and simultaneous fast charging is the shortest path to capacity loss.

How does a home wallbox protect your battery?

The key to battery longevity is charging with alternating current (AC) at a lower power. By using a home charging station (wallbox), you deliver energy in a stable and gentle way.

  • The 20-80% rule: Thanks to the intelligent features of Defenzo chargers, you can set a schedule so that the car only charges to 80%. This is the optimal level for cell chemistry, which drastically slows down degradation.
  • Cooling during charging: Charging at lower power (e.g., 11 kW) does not heat up the battery like public stations (150+ kW), which allows the battery management systems (BMS) to operate under optimal conditions.

Summary: Is it worth fearing degradation?

The data is clear: the fear of rapid range loss is unjustified. With proper car care, after 5 or even 10 years, the battery will still be in excellent condition. By choosing smart solutions, such as home AC charging, you are investing not only in convenience but, above all, in the residual value of your car.
